After the rebuild with things running smooth, time to get back to the overclock.

So far its going well. Managed to get just over 3.5Ghz before it wanted a small step up in volts. Nice.

so far running 36 dregrees idle, 3.711 Ghz with 18.5 multi. Time to reboot and push a lil more. :D

so far so good and on alot less volts than a previous overclock that got it to 3.825.

With the 19x Multi I had to do several steps on volts to get it into windows still got room to go further.

37 degrees idle, 3.811 Ghz with 19X multi. @ 1.375v :D (unstressed)

Idle temps are good load temps are most important.

Topsecret...

Not stressing it until I hit a wall or temps/volts are getting too high for my liking.

I tried the 19.5 multi and slowly increased the volts. the last attempt was 1.51v and thats a lil close to the upper limit. I know I can get 4Ghz out of the cpu now but rather not run it redline. Think I am going to back it off to 3.8 fine tune the volts and stress it for stability.

wierd.

when this thing runs its cpu overclocked - I lose x-fire. I tested it and only one card is being detected and utilized. popped it back to stock and voila - xfire.

Try increasing PCIE voltage, if you can.

"Topsecret..." <-- Feeling a little bit of hostility there.

It's alright I been through it with other people on their overclocking endeavours and only had trouble with a handful of people. Just remember i'm trying to provide my experience with you so mistakes aren't made that others have already made.

The CPU can be hic-uping during the boot process as that is where the most stress is at the moment. This can incur information to be corrupted or lost resulting in hardware not working correctly.

Dont forget this can also happen to the kernel then your hooped for a little bit on your reinstall.

I'm just mentioning stress testing earlier so you wont have to backtrack. Overclocking properly results in "up" not up, up, down, up, down,, up.

If you don't wish for me to post I would just appreciate a polite response not to. I can respect that and will abide with those requests.

P.S. If you need a hand with anything that I can possibly do, just ask or reach me on MSN on my blackberry @ topsecret66server@live.com. I'll even do a housecall if you drink beer and smoke. 8)

whoa lol

Think that was a HUGE misunderstanding.

I definately appreciate anything that anyone and all on this forum has to offer. I am certain that most of you have much more experience in the overclocking arena.

Your name on the post was a message to you and so far from a rant or anything negative you have no idea.

Typing on a forum with obviously no tone or face to look at for body language, things can be easily misunderstood. Topsecret, you mistook me man. I never would ever message anyone in the manner that you thought, I would state again, I appreciate any and all experience that I am given. I am definately am not above anyone here and would not claim to be.

Any post to assit is a good thing - its why these forums exist. I would not be a sh*thead to anyone offering help or information.

I have the board set for 75watts ( up from the default 25 to the two slots that carry the card) So I am at a bit of a loss. Skiman do you think it requires more than 75 watts?

:P It's cool. I just got a flashback form the "..." by a old member Clarke. But i'm not going any further on that one. I'm sure some can elaborate but it's not worth the effort or trouble.

Personally i'm astounded by your OC on the Phenom 2 and have been following it. I'm still a Intel fanboi for some reason though.

I do wanna hear ski's elaboration on the pci-e needing more voltage. Like I said in the past i'll bow to his reasoning. But your xfire should work without any adjustments.

Though what I think he means is in your bios where you have your PCI frequency. Just bump it to 105 where it's automatically set at 100.

I could be wack there though. If not i'd like to hear some elaboration too :P

ah right on.

Well A good friend of mine to whom I purchased this board has years of overclocking experience and he gave me a few tips when I first got it from em.

He mentioned that one of the things I do is move it up to 75 watts for the two slots I am using for 3870's. I will wait for skiman's response to get the details on what he meant - I could be mistakenly assuming he meant the watts to the slot.

I'd like to hear it too. But i'll wait for his response rather than call.

I just never had to do that with a board on a overclock. But my history on alot of video I have come across alot of (what seems) to be cherry products.

and for the record - yes for the moment the i7's are nothing short of amazing.

For my use AMD is so mych better cause I cant justify the expense of going i7 and paying alot more for running one after checkin the cost of ram, board and all that.

the machine I built here is nothing short of very snappy. I wait for nothing to load or install. Its great. I was pretty amazed myself at it getting into windows with no volt increase up to just above 3.5 Ghz. But when I got to 3.7Ghz and beyond, with one half step on the multi, voltages were increasing exponentially lol I know I can get it to 4Ghz but as stated dont want or need to run this at redline.

I backed it off to 3.711 Ghz earlier this am and prime95'd it. Upped the volts one small step and re-ran. Stable. its then I noticed xfire wasnt working when I ran 3dmark.

I checked gpuz and same. 2nd card was invisable.

I based the PCIE Voltage recommendation upon the block diagram found at the following link.

http://techreport.com/articles.x/13628

Edit, I was just reading the manual for your board. P. 4-18 has the information.

Try setting the NB PCIE PLL to 1.9V and see if you still loose crossfire.

Thank you Skiman for taking the time to research. Something I should have done myself but had company show up and had to leave the x-fire issue for a little later.

I am going to try this when I get off work today and I will post the result after I have a looksee at the manual and try out your suggestion. If all is well then I owe Ski a Beer :D
