Post subject:  UPS Poll

Just wondering how many of the people here actually use a UPC power backup on their systems.

I have in the past but in the last few years of moving around I have pretty much just been using surge protecting power bars and wondering if I should switch back.

I've been using one for years, I'm on my second battery. It's a little on the low side to do much other than a safe shutdown with my current rig.

I don't do much on the computer that would make a UPS vital.

I am however quite anal about backing up often while I'm working on a big project just in case the power dies on me.... :)

AC -> Battery charger -> Car Battery -> 1KW inverter -> Surge Protector.

And you got a spare car battery and charger to boot :)

Computer -> Surge protector/power bar -> wall. She goes off when the power does.

Funny you should mention that because this whole thread started when I saw one on sale in a flyer the other day for a price that I would consider.

I'll PM you the deets.

I've been using one for the last 4-5 years. I think it will soon be time to by a whole new unit instead of just the battery.

I am on one , my wife is on one and so is my son in Darthmouth. My sons was because the power was so bad it was causing crashes and drive faults and so the power conditioning features has stopped his issues. My wife and I only because of power spikes and power failures.

My entire office is on one now in case the power goes out while I'm home, it will give me time to shut everything down safely so I don't lose any folding work or fry any hardware.

It also protects against annoying power flickers, which is always nice too, especially when I hear my dad yelling that his computer just turned off and the lights flicker, yet I'm still browsing the web :)

Internet modem and router is also on the UPS in case the eastlink lines stay up, which they usually do :)
