What raid card would be good using 4 x SSD's?

Post subject:  What raid card would be good using 4 x SSD's?
Building a new computer and going to raid my 4 SSD's. What is a good card? What should I expect for through put? Is it worth raiding the cards? Thank you.

Adaptec is good, you can see my benchies in my "Adventures with SSD" thread. Areca is also a good brand from what I hear.

Basically the more money you spend, the faster it "should" be. Also I might suggest getting a raid card that supports 8 drives, in case you get the itch later on.

What drives are they? I got the old crappy Gen 1 drives, I'm sure they would be quite craptacular being used on a mobo's raid. A very good singular 256GB drive will cost over 1000$, and will probably use SATA 3 as in interface (so upgrading your mobo on top of that). So i'm still quite happy with double the performance using older/cheaper tech.

The theoretical peak speed of them gen1 drive was "up to 200MB"/s, and their 4k random seek times are atrocious. The gen 2 drive I got for a replaces is slightly better. I only expected to get 500MB/s throughput when I set it all up, and after finding the right kind of striping and updating the firmware I was able to get 550MB/s ish.

Your mileage may vary, so to be taken with a grain of salt.

I'm just your beta tester. If you really are interested in seeing how your drives would perform, you can bring em over to my place with an 8 pack of beer and I can test run some setups (I have an extra breakout cable so it's not that much effort) on my card.

Thanks for the reply. They are Samsung 256 SSD'd. Do not know what gen they are. I think 2 or 3 of them do not support trim but have 'garbadge Collector self defrag". The 4th one has trim support. Trim support is a moot point as Win 7 trim does not work through trim. So for de frag I was thinking of using Tony Trim

My guess is first gen. Hopefully I am wrong. They were warranty replacements for a Dell, Take a bit of research to find out. I could not find the firmware update for these drives. Maybe I am looking in the wrong places.

Be nice to test them out. I'll be tied up this month as I am self employed but would like to see what they can do. Later on this month should be good. I'll buy the beer! :lol:
