Post subject:  Time for a new computer

I've had my current computer for just over 4years and it's really starting to show its age in games. I'm looking to spend some where between $1500-2000. Also I'll probably be holding off on purchasing it till the new year so that can be taken into consideration. Any suggestions would be great on getting the best value for my money. I'd love The new ATI card, but would be hard pressed to swing it unless prices drop come January.

a mid-high end ati card or crssfire setup, and an intel chip...exactlly what, is hard to say untill the time gets closer...

Without Crossfire or a X2 card.

I would go with a 9800 GTX. Unless you can actually grab a 4870x2 or a gx2 for cheap.

Intel is the way to go.

Yah, right now I have an older AMD Athlon 64+ 2.44ghz but it seems from what you guys have been saying is that Intel is now better. I guess I'll just wait till Mid-December to price it out then and see what I can do.

intel owns the cpu market right now IMHO...quads are getting pretty cheap, i am running an e8400 which is a great cpu...but with nahelm on the horizon...it will be interesting to see how intel does with an intergrated memory contoller

a q6600 is more then enough horsepower for games, although prices for it seem to be spiking upward rather then downward.

What do you guys think of this computer from Gateway
It seems pretty solid for $1200 US, sucks that the Canadian dollar is so low though.

Ah, sounds good I don't want to be slapped, was just browsing and it seemed to good to be true, guess it was :) . Not sure if I could build a better one, had MB build my last one. I don't know much about putting it together yourself :(

the problem with HP, Gateway and Dell is that they charge too much for parts but also they use bad proprietary motherboards with no overclocking and rarley any bios updates for new cpu's. Even when they use an off the shelf board they typically have a custom bios that removes all the good stuff.

Ok, cool thanks for the info, I didn't know about that. I'll be sticking to a custom built one it seems.
